ACC Adventure Sports Approved for Fall 2007

QUEENSBURY – A proposed adventure sports associate in applied science degree and certificate program to be offered by Adirondack Community College has received approval from SUNY and the NYS Education Dept. ACC will now begin accepting students for the fall of 2007. The Adventure Sports: Leadership and Management program means that students can pursue AAS degrees in one of three areas: Challenge Course – programming, facilitation and management; Snow Sports – instruction, patrolling and mountain operations; and Whitewater Paddle Sports – guiding, instruction and river operations. A one-year certificate program in adventure sports will also be offered. A student who successfully completes the two-year degree requirements will have the option of transferring to four-year programs at select SUNY and private institutions, where articulation agreements are being developed. The new major will bring together advanced outdoor skills with the academic training necessary for leadership and management in outdoor settings. Courses will include backcountry living, backcountry canoeing, Eastern mountaineering, backcountry rescue and medicine, Adirondack Park policies and issues, adventure program management and foundations of adventure education. An Open House is scheduled for Wednesday, November 29 from 6-8pm at the Scoville Auditorium, Room 206, with a presentation beginning promptly at 6:15pm. RSVP: (518) 743-2264. The Adirondack Adventure Sports Center will continue to offer continuing education for the outdoor professional and sports enthusiast. Call or email Rick Dawson, AASC director, at 743-2250 or dawsonr@sunyacc.edu.
