Bicycling

Welcome to the Mohawk-Hudson Cycling Club!

by Brian Daniels

The Mohawk-Hudson Cycling Club has been in existence since 1969 and presently has about 700 members. We host road and mountain bike rides generally within an 80-mile radius of Albany, New York. What’s more, during cycling season, we schedule bicycle rides almost every day of the week. Whether you are new to cycling, or simply new to MHCC, you’ll find rides to fit your ability and fitness level.

Because MHCC is not a racing club we are able to organize a wide variety of rides for beginners through experts. We do count racers among our membership and if you are an ultra-fit and fast roadie or expert mountain biker you’ll find plenty of people to challenge your fitness. But let’s say that you simply like being outdoors and enjoy riding your bike — you’ll find plenty of people to ride with too. We’re probably equally split between riders who like watching their numbers and those who like watching the scenery. Our Web site, www.webmhcc.org, lists our ride calendar along with ride guidelines to help you identify the road and mountain bike rides that fall within your ability or interest.

In addition to great rides and camaraderie, MHCC members receive our club newsletter, the BikeAbout, published ten times a year. The BikeAbout contains a variety of bicycling-related articles, club and relevant local news, safety and education topics, and general interest articles. Members can post free classified ads in the BikeAbout and on the club Web site. Club members also save 10 percent on clothing and accessories at most local bike shops with proof of membership.

The Mohawk-Hudson Cycling Club hosts two large and very popular special events each year. The Century Weekend at Saratoga Spa State Park in Saratoga Springs on September 10-11, 2005, and the Mountain Bike Festival on September 17, 2005. These events which have a long history are for many the climax of the cycling season.

As much social events as rides, these happenings are a great way to get to know the club. But don’t wait that long to get to know the Mohawk-Hudson Cycling Club — if you’ve thought about joining us but wondered whether you’d fit in, the answer is yes!
