CLUB CORNER

Saratoga Biathlon Club

by Laura Clark

Located in Day, NY, near Sacandaga Lake, the Saratoga Biathlon Club will be celebrating its 20th anniversary next year. The club offers a private trail system for skiing, snowshoeing, running, biking and hiking, among other activities. The trail system is owned and maintained by Jim Schreiner, father of three-time Olympian Curt Schreiner. Competitions are held year round, with athletes running or mountain biking in the summer and skiing or snowshoeing in the winter.

Membership fees are $25 per individual or $35 per family. Beginners are encouraged to participate; all competitions are preceded by shooting clinics and there are plenty of loaner rifles available. Some members, however, simply enjoy using the club's challenging trail system. If you are serious about winter sports, membership brings an additional bonus — snow seems to come earlier and linger later than anywhere else in the area. The club also is the home of the newly formed Bill Koch Youth Ski League, a Nordic ski program for youth ages 13 and younger.
